Featured project: Ho‘ike o Haleakala

Harbinger developed this 975-page supplemental high school curriculum in collaboration with Maui County teachers, Hawai‘i Natural History Association, Haleakala National Park, The Nature Conservancy, and other land and resource managers, conservation organizations, and cultural groups.

The curriculum blends science disciplines, resource management, traditional culture, Hawaiian language, and current issues. Instructional activities and units are organized around four ecological zones found on Haleakala, the younger of the two volcanoes that comprise the Hawaiian island of Maui.

This project originated during discussions among Park Service staff and teachers about the logistical barriers to regular school field trips to Haleakala National Park. The curriculum was conceived as a way to "bring Haleakala into the classroom."

Harbinger wrote the curriculum, coordinated testing and review, conducted project team working meetings, completed the design and layout work on the curriculum, and consulted on future project activities as well as a planned CD-ROM and website.
